Big Cedar
« on: January 30, 2016, 04:25:15 pm »
What's up fellas? Been a while since I've posted anything on here. It's been a very busy fall and winter  so haven't had much spare time for bowbuilding and such but I've still been lurking around on here from time to time. Anyway, I came across this beautiful redcedar that had been cut down by the power company and I couldn't pass it up. It is 7' long, 16" across the base, pipe straight and fairly knot free considering its redcedar. Haven't had time to do much with it yet but it sure does make my shop smell good.

16" across?  Hope you didn't have to load that by yourself!

Gotta be a bow in there somewhere!

That's an awesome one. I bet you had fun getting that one. Does it have a tree inside like the ones Id cut did. I expect to see some great bows come from it.

There should be some good sapwood bows in that thick sapwood. You can get a bow of at least 45# from the sapwood, even an ELB style.

That is a beauty of a cedar tree.  Nice haul.  Post some pictures when you get it split up.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

Thanks fellas. I did load it by myself but it wasn't too bad, this stuff is super light. Im hoping there are a few bows in there and I will post some more pics when I get it peeled and split up.

Kyle I didn't notice a tree inside the tree but that sounds interesting 8)

I've cut osage half that size that felt heavier than this log. I've tried erc for bows before without much luck so I'm not a huge fan of it but this log is too clean not to give it another go. Most of the time I feel it serves its purpose better as mantles and toy chests and things such as that. :)
