Yew Flatbow w/ Timber Rattler skins
« on: August 09, 2015, 03:10:36 am »
I started this bow at Marshall this past spring. Some of you guys might remember me trying to steam the deflex kink out of one limb,
but accidentally opened up a crack in the handle because of the way I jigged it up.
I brought it home, dealt with the handle, and spent some serious time with this one.
It was a small diameter tree from up the coast of BC, and I was able to get 2 really cool staves from it, one on top of the other.
The sapwood ranged from 3/4" to 1/16", so I tried to thin it down in areas as best as I could, while still maintaining its bumps and wiggles.
Tillering was a little tough, the bottom limb has a slight deflexed tip, and the top has a slight reflexed tip.
The limbs both leave the handle at different angles, so this bow never saw my tree, and was tillered all in front of a mirror and my camera.
Came in at 50# at 28", 63" ntn.
It feels very well balanced, very light in the hand on release, and deserved the beauty snake skin from TimothyR.
The skin was big enough to be split down the centre and cover the entire bow.
Tips are bighorn sheep horn, and the handle wrap is cane and silk.
Finish is 2 coats of shellac and 4 coats of tru oil.
I've been wanting to make a bow for a friend for a while, and thought this would be the perfect one.
He's a big reason I make and shoot bows, and I wanted to give him something to show how much I appreciate it.
I was dealing with some heavy stuff at the time, and finding archery and bow building really helped me get through it.
He's a true archer, and well deserving of a true self bow. He instantly gave another friend his FG bow and a set of arrows, so he continues to plant the seed. Cheers Tegan!
Thanks for looking!

Superb bow, great back story :).
Wonderful gift for a true friend.
I love that style of bow, similar to my regular go to field bow.

Very nice Ryan! I really like the story, it's great that you are paying back. It's always rewarding to do something like this for someone who means a lot to you!
Tiller looks really nice to! What is the handle wrap? Bamboo?  Page

Building a bow has been the most rewarding, peaceful, and frustrating things I have ever made with my own two hands!

Another well made yew bow man. I love the drawn shape. Your buddy will be and should be tickled to receive that sweety.

Sharp looking bow with the skins, handle wrap and tip overlays blending beautifully together. But the full draw shape is what sealed the deal and makes the whole package complete. Nice!
I ain't broke but I'm badly bent.

Great bow wizard. Even better story I'm sure he will love it and the thought behind it is the real winner.
In all your ways acknowledge  him and he will make your paths straight.
