what are your other hobbies?

Id reckon none of us just build bows. Im curious what else everyone does.

I have designed and built two wooden boats, made many balsa airplanes, plastic models, a few knives, and I like to draw landscapes and portraits.  I also enjoy building muscle cars, as well as functional model jet engines.

I worked on one car for twenty years. Tore it down to the frame every winter to try something different. Turbo'ed, intercooled 2.9 Ford V6. About 300 hp in a 2000lb car. It was really fun. I love G's. Scratch built independent rear suspension. Moved front suspension ahead 3". After putting about $20,000 in it my back wouldn't bend any more so I sold it for $3500. As you can see it never did get the final tweeks. After that came bonsai, still have some trees. Then I took up R/C sailboat racing, still do that on Fridays. Then I discovered bows!!!

That looks like it was allota fun. I used to have a 71 skylark that was my baby. Sold it to build a boat.

The motor well puts the weight of the engine further forward reducing speed required to plane. Ever get up on the bow of a boat to help it get over the hump? Also, even though I have upgraded to a rebuilt 25 hp johnson, I still dont like changing plugs hanging off the tail end of the boat in rough water. Speaking of tail ends.... makes a great john if you need to go. Also puts the prop further forward sonfishing lines are less likely to hit it when landing the bof one. Another benefit is I have a full size transom so if I catch a big wave of the rear I wont swamp.

Good points. What about changing the shear pin? Or do outboards still have shear pins?

It kicks up. The motor well I call it the dog house.  The transom will have a cut out in the traditional shape of a dog door to allow the motor to kick up. From there you can change the sheer pin from inside the boat still with the roof to the dog house off.

I have high hopes for the sweep in the bow. This has been a two year project. It goes slow when you only use a sharp rock and a KaBar to build it.   But honestly, its a flat bottom dorry with a V hull entry. The hope is the V entry skims the surface under power to cut chop before it hits the flat bottom. Hopefully the water will be tamer by time it gets to the back allowing for a smoother ride. The flat bottom in the back is the planning surface. It will ride only on its last 3 feet. That allows for more efficient performance.  Less hp and lower rpms for a fast ride. I hope to take this to the gulf and fish the flats out there in her. She is built to handle swells and 3 foot chop. Idea being she will get me home long after I wish I wasnt out there. Hopefully next year....
