What do you think about this tiller?
« on: June 15, 2015, 11:17:31 pm »
So I'm working on an osage flatbow for my uncle. The tiller seems to be foolin me a bit due to the handle causing the bow to be kind of gullwing shaped. What do you think about my tiller so far? Also will 65 inches of Osage with about 8 inches of handle and fade make it to 50-60 pounds at 28"? Thank you everyone.

Looks like mid limbs are stiff. The left limb looks better of the two but stiffer than the right side. I would scrape the right limb in the middle and exercise and see how it looks.

Mid limb and out seem a little flat to me, but it's hard to tell. On tricky profiles, you really gotta just trust in your thickness taper.
If your handle is set back be care to not get your fades moving more than they should

Good advice above.
I don't like that tiller sticks or trees, I don't use it anymore except for measuring drawweight. I do all my fine tillering in front of a huge mirror in about 5ft distance. My experience is having the bow in hand and pulling at the right place shows a really different shape than on the tree. And you can watch the movement of the limbs. Another thing is the feel you get, I mean the movement of the whole system. Does it want to twist, does it want to upward or downward.

I don't use it anymore either. I just needed a good place to take a picture.

Looks stiff mid right limb but I would flip it around and look from the other side before doing much scrapping, it has quite a ripple on that limb and sometimes will look much different when you flip it and look at the other side. :)
