Yew american flatbow 66" 50# at 28" - salmon skins
« on: March 20, 2015, 06:30:51 pm »
Here is a dressed up yew bow with a basic American flatbow design.  It was a trade bow for a really cool yew wood flute. My friend Jeff Calavan of Oregon flute company makes some incredible flutes. I backed this one with salmon skins after reducing the sapwood down from 3/8" to a fat 1/4". Not the tightest grain yew. Shoots great. A little string follow makes it really forgiving and completely dead in the hand.
I didnt do a very good job of photos on this one.

Looks like a nice clean bow Carson.

Thanks Weylin. It sure shot well for me that day at Kutch's...except on the steel bears! I am thinking I like a 50# for those foam hunting coarses.

Thanks bubby, Gordon took that photo.

Thanks good Chris

Thanks Paco!

I like it. Good quality photos too.
Straight wood may make a better bow, but crooked wood makes a better bowyer

Thanks Goat! I agree, the coarse grained yew is good stuff. Generally a little softer and lighter than the tight grain, but not always. It really does well with a good belly tempering.

Thanks DWS, I just forgot to get some braced and unbraced pics.

Thanks Peacebow...yeah that stump had photo opportunity written all over it.

Idaho Matt, Thanks! I have cleared up some time to finish bows...which is my goal for this yea: FINISH  bows. Starting em easy.  ;) I might even post another one tomorrow..if I can get it all wrapped up and have the energy for photos and the photobucket dance.
