I know squat about erc, never worked with it but I'm interested in seeing how this goes. I admire your spunk Chris, you sure aren't afraid to jump all in on a win or lose project. :)

Chris, you beat me to it.  I also have a build along in the works.  I'm gathering pictures. I went for a linen backed ERC.  I was debating on what to do about the back also.  But I went with my gut( and easy of construction)I will be posting mine in some time next week in the Build along section)   
I've only built 3 ERC bows. All are from trunks. Two were unbacked but only ended up around 38-40# (i was new to bow making). I built an raw hide backed ELB at 50# and took it out one cold day and BOOM! ( but after looking at pictures of FD I could see that my tiller was off, so that was my fault ::))
 I know you can do it.  And I will be watching, cause I have plenty of the stuff.

What width taper are you going for? Personally I'd go for a pyramid, crowned belly and flat back. Pyramid taper should hopefully make it a shade easier to get even stress everywhere. Wish I had a piece of that stuff....it's beautiful wood.

Thanks Chris. I thought this thing had about run it's coarse and I was going to have to go this alone without much historical data. Looks like the R&D is picking up. I know my next bow after the sassafras will be some summer cut hickory but I am going to have some ERC curing as well. Maybe I can find a good size limb. Good luck and full speed ahead.

Thanks for all the replies folks. :)

I have a sneeky suspicion that this came from the tension side of the tree...after I cut it out it relieved its self of some stresses and moved a little towards reflex...and then overnight it moved another 1/4" or so towards reflexing. Now it also prob has some moisture to lose at it was a full sized stave with its bark on,and stored out in a shed. I weighed it and recorded its weight last night,and when I go down to the shop later today I'll know just how wet it is/was by how much weight it lost. If I think its too wet I'll even up and reduce the tiller some and let it set a week or so.

Mike I didn't quite have enough width IMO to make a pyramid with it...so right now its at a overbuilt flatbow profile...i started it out as wide as I could knowing I can remove wood later if need be.
