New feather burner!

A buddy and I made a feather burner yesterday.  It was pretty simple,  a piece of wood, 3 bolts, piece of .024 guitar wire, 6 deck screws and an old battery charger.  Took us about an hour or so. What do you think?

Don't mind the arrow, it's an old bamboo flu flu with a few repairs.  Patrick

I've got a real old Young that still works great. I should look for some new ribbons cause this one stinks even when it's cold from so much use. I actually cleaned it and it still smells. I also have an old 110 to 12 volt converter that I think would work if toyed with a bit. I really don't use mine much because I have 4 different choppers and generally strip wild turkey feathers that get trimmmed by hand.

That looks like it will get the job done.  Make sure and burn your feathers outside

 Fred, I have an old Young burner too. It was given to me by a friend and it was given to him by an 80 year old guy that shot in the 40s an 50s. He also gave me a JoJan straight Multi-Fletch, same era.

Thanks guys,  I set my charger on 6 volts and manual. It worked really good. If you use the 12 volt Fred you might put a dimmer on it.

Osage, I did them in the garage with the door open. The smell don't bother me to bad but it sure ain't roses that's for sure. Here was the results of the first real run. We burnt 3 sets . Patrick

They are kids arrows with really small knocks so we taped the ends to fit our hole.

Are you using a full 120 volts..?

Bow 101,  I'm using the 6 volt setting on my battery charger. Ac current won't create enough resistance. Patrick

I'm very uneducated in the ways of arrow making. Can you explain how you use it and why? Is there already a thread with the explanation, I searched with little results?

GaryR,  pretty much the feather burner is just for shaping the fletching on your arrows.  In short, you would tie or glue on a full size feather cut to your predetermined length, then place the shaft in the notch on the burner, turn on the burner and when the wire glows red you would slowly rotate the shaft and the wire will shape your feathers just like the ones you buy.

Check out you tube and search for feather burners and there are some good videos that shows the process. Hope that was as clear as mud! Lol Patrick
