I was boxing again
« on: August 02, 2014, 04:10:15 pm »
I guess I could post the boxes with the bowls.
There are a lot of similarities in producing them.
Then again as different as boxing and bowling.
I don't do these project like a fine wood worker.
If you look close you will see tool marks and wavy surfaces.
I like that.

He used partially rotted, mold filled nasty wood!  Worthless stuff for bow making.  Beautiful, ain't it?
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.

Spalted Maple?  Those are beauties!
Any critter tastes good with enough butter on it.

JW is totally correct. The spores can get in your lungs and kill you.
If it starts growing in mine I think I have an antidote that
the American Medical Association is ignorant of.
But I'll need a buddy to revive me after inhaling enough diluted
vinegar to drown me. Did you see the flick, Abyss?

Jack, in my other thread "Went Bowlin" I do have my first chainsaw bowl
and it is maple. The boxes are either cotton wood or sycamore.
They look identical.

Gotta love spalted wood. If not too soft I sometimes use it for knife scales then Danish oil it to harden. Mighty purty boxes.

Agreed longbow. The low spots in the work are soft spots.
I don't have wood hardener so I use some epoxy and count
on the plastic to keep things together.

neuse-- slim chance but if I do another I will try.
One thing I can advise is do as much chainsaw work as you can
while the work is still on the stump or log. Unless you have a big outdoor vice.
If you are not very, very familiar with chain saws, Don't do it.
I have chain sawed for almost half a century.
The chiseling is not as dangerous, Just keep the tools max sharp.
When you work with spalted wood, at least wear a dust mask.
Goggles especially when using a grinder.
I work with out a guard but bite in way slow. Those  inside walls can send that abrasive right at ya.

Thanks Pappy,
It's the wonderment of the wood that invokes the work.
