Board bow question?
« on: June 14, 2014, 05:21:07 pm »
I have a 1/2" thick nice grained hickory board that is already cut out pyramid style width wise...but it is 1/2" thick from tip to tip including handle area.  What can I do as far as far as gluing on a handle to where it won't pop off? Thinking since I can't taper the thickness into an already glued on riser block.  I've got to think there's an easy solution.  Thanks for the help!!

there are some options, what are the dimensions of the stave
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

I was hoping to get your input, bubby, i am a big fan of your board bows.  Board is 63" ttt, 2" at fades straight taper to 1/2" tips. Looking for 55@28 and im thinking of throwing in a lil bit of reflex and or flipping the tips

what I would do is glue a 1/8" thick pc on 16" long and then glue several 8 1/2" pcs on, I think that will give you plenty to work and the longer pc act's as a power lam, I've done this before with great results, use some contrasting wood for a nice look

here's an example although this bends in the handle some no issues with it popping off

Ok i can do that. Should the 16" pc and then the 8" pieces mimic the width profile of the bow itself?  And i assume that the 16" piece will serve to stiffen the bending limb much like a thickness fade would and keep the 8" pieces from bending?

yeah make them the width of the fades and then trim them, that's how I do it, I think when all is said and done you are going to have limbs thinner than 1/2" and the handle won't bend, and it's possible most of the extra length on the longer lam will be gone
