Another HHB recurve
« on: April 15, 2014, 08:15:56 pm »
I was quite pleased with the way the last HHB recurve turned out so I decided to make another, this time for myself.  The bow is relatively the same design but, at 63" overall, 1" shorter.  Also because I wasn't making this bow directly for someone else I tweaked it a bit.  The recurves are steam bent and the limbs heat-shaped but this time I heat-treated the HHB, the backing is again Sugar Maple.  I glued in a bit more reflex with a total of 6 1/2"" coming off the form.  It has kept fully 4" of that, which makes bracing it a bit of a handful.  The shallow D section limbs are just over 1 3/8" wide at the fades and the nocks are 3/8" wide with Cocobolo overlays.  I tillered the bow out to 60# @ 28" and from shooting it is quite fast.  Here's a few pics

Quite frankly HHB is just the perfect wood for this kind of bow especially when tempered

Thanks.

The bow could actually take a 29" draw probably even 30" but it's only tillered to 28"

Love that design. Looks like it's hardly stressed and unbraced  its  holding plenty of reflex. I would like to shoot one some day.

That's just wicked. Single growth ring Maple? I guess it would be worth ruining a perfect Maple stave for that.

That bow looks extremely fast Mark. It amazes me how you consistently build this style into your bows.

I really like how the handle has been shaped. Looks very very nice all around though.
