This bow was my first attempt at a lam/board type bow and tip overlays- I made a few errors but it was a good learning curve. It's made from New Zealand native timbers and I'm happy with the wood combo and the performance of the bow. Red beech/Tawhairuanui [nothofagus fusca] is a medium density hard wood and maybe silmilar to maple? There is about five species of beech in NZ and they make up a large percentage the forest at higher altitude. There is also nothofagus variets found in Australia and South America.
Black maire/ nestegis cunninghamil is NZ's second densest timber- 995kg m3 and is mostly used today by wood carvers and turners making flutes and maori war weapons like taiaha because of its hardness.
