Some recent skulls
« on: March 17, 2014, 11:22:47 pm »
I just finished up some skulls that I collected over the last year or so.  I clean them as I get them and wait until I get a few before I set up the peroxide bath.

The coyote was a roadkill I picked up on my way home from work.  It was so fresh it was still twitching when I pulled it out of the road.  The two massive groundhogs were destroying a retaining wall at work.  As the resident redneck, I was asked to remove them  ;D  The turtle was hit by the mowing crew at work.  I cooked his skull in a tin foil bowl on the coffee maker at work  :o  The other skull is one I picked up in the woods.  It looks like a small ground hog or something similar.  It didn't get as white as the skulls I cleaned.

The ground hog on the left had a healed over dent in its nose.

Turtle skulls always remind me of dinosaurs.  Cool work, Clint!

Thanks Derik and JW.  Skulls fascinate me.  Its neat to see the difference in bone structure between species.

I have a kestrel skull macerating in a mason jar of water.  I need to pull it out and rinse it off soon.

Holy cow, those are awesome man!  Do you submerge them in a 40 peroxide solution or something?  If so, for how long?  I'd love to make some of those for display.
Thanks,

Nice batch of skulls Clint! I didn't see the rooster skull from Dave's house last year? >:D

I have a Belgium horse skull on my desk at school and the students love that thing sitting next to a few other deer and fox skulls. I need to try your method on some duck skulls next year.

Nice job.  I'm gonna start doing that on deer if I ever get another decent buck.

Thanks Bubby.  I would like to get a bear skull one day.  They are hard to find in my area  :(

Thanks PAhunter.  I soaked these in 40 volume peroxide from a beauty supply store.  I added a little bit of 50% peroxide just to spice it up a little.  I put a heater blowing on my peroxide bath to heat it up while they were soaking.  It works better the warmer it gets.

Thanks Pappy and Greg.

Tracy, that rooster skull got ate by the dog I think.  I might try a turkey this spring.  Do you have a picture of that horse skull?  I bet that thing is huge.

One of the machine shops that we use here at work has a interesting bone on display.  It is a vertebrae out of a whale.  Huge!

Turtle skulls are awesome.  I'm going to try and get a big snapper skull this summer.  I see them hit on the road a lot.  I just need to find one before it gets to ripe.  I would like to get a sea turtle skull but that would be another tough one to find.

JW, I would have to get a dermestid beetle colony to clean skulls that fragile.  I tried cleaning a chipmunk and the bone seemed to dissolve away.
