lemon wood in Cuba
« on: March 05, 2014, 02:11:17 pm »
A bowyer friend is going to Cuba this weekend for a couple weeks.
We know theres lots of degame there, having trouble tracking down
a website or any info at all.
Has anyone aquired lemonwood in Cuba and
could point us in the right direction?
I know this is a long shot!

I don't think Cuba lets tourists go wandering off on wood harvesting excursions. I really doubt lumber has the same importance it had when there was demand and no embargo.

already harvested lemonwood from a dealer in Cuba.

Nobody in the US has gotten anything(legally) from Cuba since the embargo began in the 1960's.

Pretty sure you can bring back cigars for your own use after making a trip there.

I think it's fine as long as you don't post an unauthorized link to the website you intend to sell said cigars from!   :o ::)  8)

They wouldn't let me bring them back from Canada or the Bahamas.

Don't know about Cuba but my wife tried to  bring back some Guava staves from Honduras. They were confiscated by US customs. They told her that if it was finished lumber it would be OK. Man, I was sick, they were hand picked by my father in law off of his Guava plantation. I'd do my homework if I was you so you don't go to a lot of trouble for nothing.

Never been to Cuba, but all the photo's I've seen of the place are pretty well denuded of forests. I'd be surprised if you couldn't find some to cut down though. There would have to be local hardwood dealers and sawmills too. Hope you know someone who is fluent in Spanish. Good luck.

 8) Lemonwood for posterity sake. There's better bow wood in the good old USA. But I will vouch for the Cuban cigars although other countries now closely compare. After Castro took control some of the finest tobacco farmers escaped to nearby regions and started over. You can take away their farms but not their knowledge.
I found many years ago that it is much easier and more rewarding working with those that don't know anything than those that know it all.
