What size Shinto?
« on: February 03, 2014, 01:55:37 pm »
Which size Shinto rasp would you guys recommend the 9" or the 11"?  Ive been using a cheap dollar two ninety eight rasp that I dropped and broke.  Time for a quality rasp or two.  I already have the Save Edge on the way and want a Shinto as well.

I think the rasp I have is about 9". It works well. Without ever trying a 11" I can't say which is better. All I have is the blade with no handle. I need to get at least a handle for this one or a complete Shinto rasp. Don't get one with the handle in back and front. For me it was awkward to use. I'd get a straight handle Shinto.

Thanks guys.  I now have the 11" model with the straight handle on the way.  Osage shavings to follow shortly.

Great choice Greg.

What is the difference between a farriers rasp and a Shinto?

Shintos are hacksaw blades pinned together, check them out online. They level and/or remove wood like no other.

I guess I could have done that in the first place hey  ::) ::) . They look like a neat tool. Do they clog up any worse than a farriers rasp or do the big holes self clean?

They don't plug up Don. Unless of course the wood is very green and "sticky".
