Can vine maple bark be left on?

I like the golding effect I get when I can just slip the bark of the staves, but I'm wondering if I can leave the bark on some of my winter cut staves and leave it on the back.

My experience with vine maple is the bark starts separating from the wood during tillering.

Gordon is right, I left some of the cambium on and it scared the crap out of me everytime I heard it crack.

I've never had the cambium crack on me, but it was always itty bitty spots. Do you think a sort of spotted pattern is less likely to crack than strips or patches?
