Can vine maple bark be left on?
« on: January 31, 2014, 04:42:55 am »
I like the golding effect I get when I can just slip the bark of the staves, but I'm wondering if I can leave the bark on some of my winter cut staves and leave it on the back.

Might as well make them short, save some wood to keep warm.

My experience with vine maple is the bark starts separating from the wood during tillering.

Thank you Gordon. Guess I'll scrape it off and stain the back.

Gordon is right, I left some of the cambium on and it scared the crap out of me everytime I heard it crack.

If you have to pull the trigger, is it really archery?

I've never had the cambium crack on me, but it was always itty bitty spots. Do you think a sort of spotted pattern is less likely to crack than strips or patches?
