Israeli Rocks from the Negev - Picture Added
« on: January 20, 2014, 08:48:58 pm »
Got home from Israel this morning. I swear, I've never been anywhere in my life that as far as you could see was Primo Flint and chert. I tried to High Grade some to sneak home in my luggage in case what was being shipped with the samples never made it. I was going crazy, I'd pick up a nice piece walk 10' and there's a better piece. This went on for an hour and I told the Geologist, enough. I'd go crazy and be there all afternoon trying to find the best 4 pieces to take with me. I'll post pictures tomorrow with what I brought with me and what the TSA found in my luggage, yep, they opened both bags, left me a note and had the rocks sitting on top of my clothes.
I was glad they didn't know the Customs laws or I would have been busted. You need US Agriculture stamps to bring rocks or soil into the US from a foreign country. Those will be on the box of "sample" rocks coming in this week.

This stuff chips like perfect, heat treated Texas rock. Pictures tomorrow.

Welcome Home Eddie! Glad you made it safe.  Sounds like the Holy Land for knappers over there.  That may be why some of the first civilizations prospered so much, huh?

Welcome Back, hope you have some time off now, dpgratz

Hey, Rog, I have an all day class at the College Saturday. Derik, the first piece of flint I picked up the first day I got there had been worked on both sides.

No Saturday for you?  You going just Sun?
Hmm, makes me wonder about my plans.  Maybe I'll stay over in Mt. Dora this year and just go during the days for a bit.  Due to go and see Grandma.

Mullet,
Spent 2 years in the IDF and spent alot of time in the Negev. The secret is to mail them home. I have a nice mineral collection that I mailed back to Myself. They generally don't check Soldier mail back to the family. The only thing off limits were Katusha Rockets or their parts...and of course weapons....

Would Love to see what You make from the pieces you found. Talk about launching a "Holy Arrow:....LOL

Can't wait to see the pics.   ;D  I guess it's no wonder that there was fierce competition for that whole area for thousands of years.

I cut, polished, and wire wrapped some pebbles for a family that had visited there years back.  They were pretty nice material.

Mohawk, I didn't have time to deal with the PO and not being in the military I'd have to deal with local people. I have about 300#s of samples being shipped back this week by the client and my pile won't even be noticed and free shipping, too. In the future, I have the Geologist I was working with that will be willing to ship more to me.

Cool thread mullet.
Glad your tour finds you safe and pumped.
Back in the day, a fighting man from the states took and sent what ever he wanted to.
No extra bagage fees and the weights you could check or carry were large.
Sorry our present warriors are so stupidly restricted.
I went from Dallas to New York with a 06 in the carry on compartment, shells and all.
No one batted an eye. A year to the day after John was murdered there in Dallas.

That would help exspain why so many anchent people fought over such a deselent place.

Somewhere back in time, I read that one of King Herod's places was made from local flint.

Looking foward to the pix of the holy rocks Mullet.
