Made a bowcase and quiver over the Holidays.

This might get moved to another section but thought I would share a few pics of my latest project.

So I was off for two weeks over Christmas and decided to make a simple southern plains Bowcase and quiver. I used a nice smoked hide that fills the air with a mixture of bacon cooking and campfire smoke! LOL  ;D
I added lots of fringe, pre 1900 Italian and czech seed beads and some red felt I had lying around for decoration. I made an arrow cup from some elk rawhide attached to an ochred and beaded dogwood stick and attached some red dyed horsehair.

Beautiful work!  So is the arrow cups purpose just to open the quiver up?

The arrow cup is a traditional piece used in most quivers but often not seen in historical quivers on display today although they were more than likely there at some point. The reason for the cup is to serve multi purposes. First of all most arrows fit into the quivers of this era and place (the plains) further down in the quiver to protect the sinew wrapped arrow shafts which were susceptible to moisture, when the arrows were needed the user would pull on the cup stick and pull the arrows up from the mouth of the quiver. The second reason is to protect the bottom of the quiver from the arrow points. Often these cups had buffalo hair in the bottom of them to help keep the points from rubbing against each other and becoming dull. When you use a set up like this you do not need a stiffining rod in the quiver for it to hold its shape.

WOW Eric, that is the finest setup like that I have seen posted! Exceptional work you have there! I'm gonna have to put this one in my favorite folder so I can come back and drool some more later! Great job and thanks for showing us. That is sweeeeet!!
