Sinew backed Osage with rattlesnake skins(pic heavy)...
« on: December 17, 2013, 03:54:29 pm »
This is a bow that I've been working on in my spare time for the past few months. Sinew backed Osage, slightly over 57 ttt and 56 ntn, 55# @26". The tip overlays are whitetail antler as is the arrow rest. Strunk style leather wrap dyed with mahogany leather dye.

This was my first attempt at using a combo of homemade hide glue and knox gelatin. I probably won't use it again. I've done sinew jobs with TBIII and had zero issues but this one was a constant battle of delamination. I finally ended up putting a later of TBIII under most of it to keep it in place. Maybe my glue was faulty because I roughed up the back, cleaned it with acetone, and followed Gordon's yew build along for the use of hide glue. Guess it's just not my specialty. lol Hope you enjoy...

Sweet looking bow Sled! I really like the profile on it. What did you use for the little bend at the tips?

Nice bow!!!  Love the contrast between the grip and the skins. If I may ask, what adhesive did you use for the antler tips?, as I am debating doing the same with elk antler on the hickory bow I am currently workingon. I have heard of issues with them not staying glued on

Thanks, gentlemen.

Stickman - I heated the curves into the tips with a form, clamps and heatgun. Was originally going to go with a heavy curve, but once I started curving the tips, I liked the very subtle look better.

Mohawk - I used loctite gel super glue for the tip overlays and for gluing on the arrow rest. I have a hard time getting the surfaces perfectly flat to mate, but I made it work. I'd imagine you could wrap part of the overlays with sinew if you're worried about them coming off. Little extra insurance never hurt.

Thanks, Gordon. Kind of reminds me of a yew bow that someone on this forum made. I can't quite recall who it was, but it was such a beauty that I used it for inspiration. lol
