Sinew backed/snakeskin osage-- bow of month contest?
« on: December 15, 2007, 12:29:18 am »
Well, I hope I'm posting this in the right area of this forum for the bow of the month. Just finished it up in October. This was my first attempt at a sinew backing. Wanted to build a brush bow, it's 54" nock to nock and draws 60#@29". Has great cast. The wood is clean of knots--scored the back with a hacksaw blade and applied 3 courses of sinew/hide glue. After dry applied snake skin with titebond 2.  Ran sinew and snake skin full length to end of tips--then went over string groove with fine string wrapping and cover with 2-part epoxy to keep string from wearing into snakeskin. Used Casey's finish. I took one of the deer hooves from a selfbow harvest a couple years ago and ground down to a thin strike plate. Inletted side of handle and glued hoof bone in place. Found an old leather apron and cut and made the grip and lace. This is my fifth selfbow since starting with primitive bows in '05.  Hope you like it.  Glenn.

Looks pretty good.  It would be nice to see the full draw with a solid background where we could see it better.  Justin

Welcome to PA Glenn, glad you posted your bow. Looks like you have some real talent,
she's a pretty little thing thats for sure. I'm with Justin any chance of a pic at full draw
against a solid background? Also an unbraced pic would be nice.

Hi,
Nice job. A very sweet looking brush bow. It should be great for hunting. Excellent work. Sinew backed, with SSs... nice combo.

You did a great job on that bow. I would like to see a side profile of the bow unbraced.

Very nice - good background for your pictures, too. Got you bookmarked for Dec Self Bow of the Month. Looking forward to seeing it again.

Awesome bow! I've been wanting to build a turkey bow and it looks like I had the same idea as yourself. Great job, really like the strike plate area.

You asked a lot from that bow but it looks like it has delivered. Very nice.

Thanks for the complinents guys, I have a picture with the bow unbraced right after shooting, I will try to post it tonight but my computer skills are very limited--which brings me to my next thought---Thank You to those responsible for moving my submission and pics. to the correct site location. I will try to take a pic. indoors against solid color/ took the others by myself with my Cannon on the tripod and timer.
