Sinew Backed Osage Shorty
« on: October 28, 2013, 09:24:20 pm »
I finally landed my self an osage stave here a month or two ago. In the process of roughing out a bow, a half-ways descent sliver of wood came off intact. It seemed a bit on the small side and there were two worm holes right in the middle of the back. Having never worked Osage before and hearing so many wonderful things, I didn't want to let any of it go to waste. I cleaned out and filled the bug damage with a mix of Tightbond III and saw dust. I figured this would be a perfect chance to try out sinew as well. I only backed the middle 1/3 and the outer 2/3rds are left bare. It is a bendy handle 58" T2T 38# @24"  The handle is built up with cork and leather wrapped with sheep skin accents. Buffalo horn overlays. Little on the light side for me, but still fun to shoot.

Nice work.  It doesn't take much osage to make a bow.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

Sweet bow.  Good for you to get the tiller just right even if it meant dropping a couple pounds.  Nice work!
