Pin knot of the edge of the limb ???
« on: September 04, 2013, 03:15:34 pm »
Seem I always have some hidden pin knot pop up on me.  This one is on the edge of the limb about 10" from the tip.  It's near the edge on the belly side and tapers right to corner on the back.  I know as I remove more wood during tillering there's going to be less and less wood around the edge of the knot on the belly side.

What to do?
1 ignore it
2. clean it out and pack it with super glue
3 clean it out and glue in a tiny plug
4 remove wood from that edge so the knot is gone completely.  This would mean the limb would only be about an inch wide at that point after I match up the taper on the other side.  Plenty enough wood, but it will dramatically change the overall profile of the bow.

Here's belly, back and side view:

Dave I had something very similar on some black locust and Chris recommended a sinew "bridge" I don't if you want to consider that option though. I can dig the thread up if you like?

Honestly, I would saturate it from the belly side with super glue, make sure I had a good radius on the edge and forget it.  Just my .02. Josh

For me it would depend if I could lose the weight in the final bow. If I was to drop only a few lb under what I want I would remove it or atleast 90% of it.

I would start tillering, but instead of removing wood from the belly at that spot I would leave it proud to help compensate for the knot.  As its 10" from the tip, most people like to have relatively stiff tips these days, it shouldn't be doing the lions share of bending, so you will probably be fine.

Bodark is some remarkable stuff.  These (had multiple along both limbs), from what I can tell by your pictures, are far worse.  Filled with CA glue and never had a problem.  I would do the same here and forget 'em.

I'd saturate it with superglue...the bowyer's friend. It wouldn't hurt to let that part of the limb appear just a little flat to cut down on the bending...just a little now. Jawge

I was hunting deer one year, looked at my selfbow and right at a pin knot just like yours it lifted a splinter. I took out my knife and carved out the splinter on the spot in case a deer walked by and then wrapped with sinew when I got home. Still shooting today.

Thanks everyone.  Filling with super glue was my first thought.  But, since I had a wealth of knowledge on this board, I thought why not ask the experts.  :)
