What does he D refer to? Is it the shape of the drawn bow or across section of the limbs?

It can mean both.

It's confusing to me also. C bow is easier to understand ??? or is it?
I found many years ago that it is much easier and more rewarding working with those that don't know anything than those that know it all.

I think I read about a Reversed D somewhere. That would obviously be for cross section, oh, maybe if you were suicidal ;)
