New Novaculite Point

 Here's one for all you novaculite lovers. This is probably one of my thinnest ever for this material.  1-5/8 wide by 3/16 thick and  4-1/2 long, you do the math Just a real nice clean pc to work, I could percussion this kinda stuff forever. Thanks for lookin.  Bob

 Bob, Absolutely wonderful. We have some novaculite we just picked up and heat treated but most of it I think got to hot and crumbly. Hopefully the next batch I wont ruin. And yes that point looks great

 Novak take a lot of heat to cook. I know guys that cook it around 850. I cooked a lot at 700 and it turned out nice.

Knapper, where did you get your stone, what form was it in when heated and how fast and hot did you cook it.

The rock was from central Arkansas , It was the first time that my kiln was used. Low temp for a day, high , and med. temp for twenty four hrs. Watching the temp through the vent holes with a temp gun. Seemed to be in the 650 to 750 range. Turned off and let set closed for two days

From Kirshmans quarry or magnet cove? I would guess you went to high to fast. I have a computerized controller and hold it at 195 for minimum 24 hrs, then slowly ramp ito 725 if its from kirshmans and more if its from Magnet Cove. about 35 degrees an hour then hold it for 8-10 hrs, then slowly ramp it down to 300 and shut it off. The kiln should be full, if you have a temp probe do not let it touch rock. Must only be in the air.  If you don't have a controller you should get one.
