Some sticks just dont want to become a bow... ( pics fixed )
« on: August 18, 2013, 06:23:55 am »
But others, despite the odds being impossibly stacked against you give you a glimmer of hope. This stave is a belly split from a bow I made about a year ago. It was full of checks, some going all the way through the stave.  and one actually running off the side. It also had a rotten knot in the middle of the upper limb, and not much width to work. I also had to heat correct twist and string alignment.

I filled the checks with TBIII being sure to get all the way through the bottom of the checks until glue came out the other side. I clamped them and let them dry. Using a coping saw I cut the knot out, used a rat tail file for finer shaping, and 80 grit for final blending.

The check that goes through the bow and runs off the side and the knot are all on the upper limb. Because of the length and angle of the check, I feel that it may have a chance in holding because its just like a very long scarf joint. I have 70 inches of stave to play with here and with all the defects on the inner/mid limbs, I decided a whipish tillered bow would be wise. I have it at brace so far, and that for me, is a major hurdle. The goal here is 40-45 lbs @ 25-27 inches. Gonna play it by feel here.

Here is the parent bow this stave is a belly split from.

And here is the current project.

Handle

Run off check

Hole back

Hole belly

Brace

Tiller isnt perfect yet. But it will be perfect at brace before I start pulling back on it. What would yall have done with this? And please stop me before I make a mistake if yall see one about to happen!

Cant se the pics beside the first two. PB say you moved or deleted them.

Tip of the day: Make a folder in photobucket named "shared" Dump pics you gonna upload there BEFORE you post them and never touch that folder.

Pretty slick, sleek!  Yowza, some pieces of wood call themselves lucky when they fall into your arms!
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.

Well thanks for the compliment JW. We will see how deserving it is if this bow makes it to final tiller.

KellyG, you haven't seen nothin yet. This stave is mild, tame, and docile compared to what I will very soon be tackling.Of course, that dodoesn't mean the staves I'm about to start soon will become anything other than fuel for my forge and knife handles.

Well, I got the bow back to 26 inches. I nit picked the tiller not wanting it to fail and now it weighs 30#@26. Unacceptable.  So being as that it is 70 inches long, I'm gonna pike it.  This stick will be at least 40# at 26 inches ot it will be forge fuel. To the band saw!

With 2.5 inches removed I am now at 30@23.  I am adding some heat to the limbs to bring the tiller back around beacause piking changes the tiller. Tillering with heat adds strength rather than scrapping the strength away with a scrapper.

It popped a splinter. Right at the pointy end of the key hole towards the handle. I am certain I can save it though.

Well two inches only added 3 pounds. 33@26. Lets take another two off and see if I'm left holding a bow still.  By the way, I lifted the spliner up and loaded it with locktite gel super glue. Seems to be holding. I am taking pics along the way and will add them later.

I should add this bow had 0 set. I now have 3/4 inch of set. Wood is starting to feel some stress now.

Another update.... it sits right now at 35@26 64 ntn. Shortening it threw the tiller all kinds of funky. Heat treating the weak spots alone couldn't handle the task so material had to come off.  So I'm now trying to figure out, should I drop down to a 62 inch bow? Its still whipish in tiller, I have popped one splinter so far, and as of now, its still a bow. Problem is, its not the bow I want it to be... decisions decisions...
