found a plant tha looks like an herb but need help for i.d.

I was out gathering mullien leaves and sumac leaves to dry and smoke at a later time. Also gathered some sumac berries for some delicious lemonade. Anyway came across this plant and it looks as if it could be an herb but not sure.

  Looks like a young willow tree. Did you fine it in a low spot or along waters edge. look around see it theres a parent tree close by. It has bark so it's not a plant. Only bushs and trees have bark.

  Whats mullien leaves never heard of anyone smoking sumac.

Well it was beside the mullien plant in my backyard and it dose not have any bark on it. It kinda looks like rosemary in a way. Native Americans used to smoke sumac by itself or cut tobacco with it. Its been reported as a very good alternative to tobacco.

Your supposed to wait until October or November when the leaves are red to harvest but I'm going to see if there is any real taste or difference if you harvest when green or red.

My first thought after seeing the pic was Rosemary.
Doe's it smell like rosemary when you rub the leaves?

Honestly I don't know what Rosemary smells like.

If you rub the leaves, rosemary will leave a very pungent oily residue on your fingers.It's hard to describe what it smells like but it's a very strong smell, you cant miss it.

It has almost like a fresh cut grass smell or like when you Peel the bark off of some green oak.

does it grow in a clump and reach heights of three feet or so? Looks like Artemesia dracunculoides - wild tarragon to me. should be kind of strong smelling when crushed. Google the images and see if it looks like your plant.

It looks just like wild tarragon so I guess it is. The info I got on it says it doesn't have the strong anise smell like the cultivated version. That most subspecies will be absent the aromatic smell but is still edible and useable.

Not rosemary.

Possibly threadleaf or garden copeopsis. If it puts on a yellow flower, you will know. Some are yellow with a red center.

Looks like rosemary to me......if so the smell gives it away.
