Just a question.  Why do you put snake skins on bows?

To cover sinew backings, camo, decoration, because I like the way they look
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

Hey BowDoc that's a good question. I've never really asked myself why. I remember seeing snakeskin boots and belts 50 years ago when growing up as a kid but don't recall seeing skins on the back of bows until maybe 20 years ago.

Have they always been used and I just recently noticed it or is the practice a more recent novelty?
I found many years ago that it is much easier and more rewarding working with those that don't know anything than those that know it all.

Fred, there were a few Plains style bows from the old days with snake skin backings, mostly on sinew backed bow but they were very uncommon.

I use them to cover up the electric yellow of osage bows so I can hunt with them before they darken down some.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

Pat, I see them as an excellent backing as a camo or blending in effect. I now wonder what significance they might have portrayed to the Native American tribes and individuals that used them in the past.

They make great camo for bows.  Hawk Huston and I were hunting turkeys a couple of years ago and he was completely hidden, but every time he pointed his bow towards the decoy it looked like a neon sign.  Was a real lesson.  Joe

The big snakes like these pythons act like rawhide and look great. This skin was wide enough for 4/5 bow backings.......  I guess the things are invading the everglades.........

Inspiration, information and instruction by the ton and it's free,,, such a deal :)
