earth pigments
« on: March 31, 2013, 12:34:09 pm »
a buddy of mine from southern california sent me some rocks from his land.
he has made pigments from them and thought i would enjoy trying myself.
of course these need to be ground much finer, need to find a mortar and pestle.
the colors are amazing have numerous other reds, yellows and oranges along with one dark brown.
he also sent a chunk of asphaltum to try.

wow! Sadie,
those colors are beautiful....that purple is outstanding!
when i'm working on things my ancestors worked, singing the songs my ancestors sang, dancing the same dances, speaking the same language, only then  I feel connected to the land, THIS land, where my ancestors walked for thousands of years...

Nice colors, sadiejane. What Medium would you use as a Stain bone?

are you referring to what medium i would use with these pigments to attempt to stain bone?
if so, that is a good question and not really sure to be honest.
maybe water with vinegar? let it soak till the bone takes on color?
i typically use coffee or walnut ink to stain bone. the walnut ink is really darker than i prefer.
the coffee or tea makes a nice "natural" sort of aged color

That lavender/purple is insane.  I can't believe he has that variety of color on his land.  Wow!
