Anyone make their own clamps?
« on: February 15, 2013, 06:42:12 pm »
Been seeing posts of cauls being made and wondering if anyone had made their own clamps.  I've started doing some laminates and bought a load of spring clamps that I was not thrilled with and don't want to drop the money on a load of c-clamps.  Here's what I've come up with to clamp.  I still need to add a layer of Formica to the inside to keep glue from clinging.  Might coat it all with a varnish too.  Think it'll work?

You could use packing tape instead of formica.

I've used PVC pipe, when I didn't have enough C-Clamps.  You can cut a 2" pipe in 1 to 2" lengths.  Split the pipe then pry open and release on your clamping surface.  You may have to make your split "bigger" depending on the thickness of the material being clamped.

I like this idea a lot better actually.  Cheaper, quicker, easier...yuup that'll be what I do :) Thanks for the idea.

I am not sure how replacing formica with packing tape saves the need for clamps, but you could build your caul to accommodate wood wedges for closing gaps

I'd still use the clamps, just use the packing tape on them instead of Formica to keep them from getting glued to the bow if glue ran.

Yes, I do but I'd use wing nuts instead of the nuts. I'd also put a washer in front of the nuts.

I've got a washer on either side on the outside.  Was wondering if I should washer and nut the inside bottom just to secure the bolts.  They are somewhat secure as they are carriage bolts that have but pulled into the wood.
