How does the shinto compare to a farriers rasp or Stanley shurform rasp?
I could never get good results from the Shurform, but love the farriers rasp.

Sureforms are bad enough they dont compare to anything in my opinion. I used one about 99 bows agao and never again after. A Shinto will do several small things ferriers cant, but ferriers are my number tool. I use it for a majority of the work after it comes off my band saw.

I used one for the frist time this passed weekend,Chuck came in with one,I used for a short time and went back to the ferriers rasp,Guess it is all about what you learn on. I use the 49/50 also quite a bit. :) Got 3 or 4 sureforms hanging around the shop,never use them. :)

The Shinto I have is like the second one pictured.  That knob is useless, I use the handle in one hand and my palm on the end of the blades to guide it.  I notice when people first start using it, it can have a tendency for the edge to dive in to the wood, but after you get used to it, it sure is nice.  I use it between my big rasp and scrapers.

I didn't like the Shinto or the Nicholson 49. I have a couple of real wood eating rasp I use mostly.I did pick up two brand new Farrier's rasp at the Flea market a couple of weeks ago for $4, kinda liking them the more I use them.

Sureforms are great on Vine maple. I think I have every file mention, no real preference....depends on the wood, and it's qualities.
