Hickory Longbow
« on: November 12, 2012, 05:59:59 pm »
Been busy but finally getting back to some bow making. This one's hickory, 68" long and 40#@28". 4" handle with 3" fades, 1.75" at the fades with a concave taper to 3/8" tips. The taper is almost pyramid like but is not a straight line to the tips and gives the limbs a full look that I really like. The cross section is trapped so the back is half the width of the belly. It is also heat treated and retains 1" of reflex. With the trapping and heat treating I think it's really a testament to hickory's strength in tension. Darkened with a walnut stain and white arrows just for looks. Hope you guys like it and thanks for looking. Sorry about the crappy pics.

Thats a nice bow. Perfect tiller. A little whip ended?  I like that.  Awesome. :-) Fantastic artwork . Reminds me of the Holmegaard bow. :-)

This looks a lot like the profile you helped my son Wil cut out on his hickory stave at Mojam this year.  He was working on it again last weekend.  It's slow going as we don't get around to getting the tools out that often.  I'll be showing him this for inspiration!

Wow, that's bold: trapping the back by half and also heat treating the belly, I think that's the max you can get out of a selfbow and how tough hickory is...

Veeeeery nice bow!

How is the phisical weight of the bow? Did you get under the weihgts of Badgers bow weight table? Do you have more pics of the trapping?  :)

Ciao,

Nice job on that hickory! I been stayin away from it since there is so much humidity down here, except for backings. I guess I'll have to try the heat treating thing on some after seein that good lookin thang. ;)
