Osage Flatbow
« on: October 24, 2012, 03:42:17 pm »
A friend of mine in VA cut some Osage a few years ago but had not been able to make the time to make a bow out of some of it.  He had started on one, roughed out, and that was about it so he asked me if I would tiller the bow out for him, I said sure.  He sent me bow, it was a nice piece of wood.  Decent rings, not too thick, not too thin.  I started out by removing the sapwood that was left on the back and then started tillering it.  I didn't realize how good the wood was until I had the bow most tillered out.  I didn't measure the reflex, it had a bit, before I started but if it lost any of it then it wasn't much.  The bow is 65" N to N with 1 3/8" wide, shallow D section limbs.  I tillered it out to just under 60# @ 26".  I haven't shot it yet but it has very good string tension.  Here's some pictures

The string is made of some Linen I picked up on a popular auction site.  The linen came as thread, 35/3, that I plied up.  It's just under 1/8" thick and has a break strength of just under 300#

Nice bow. I get a kick out of all of our "styles". I could pick off a Marc bow from a mile away, just like a bunch of others bows. I bet it shoots great at that length.

I did shoot it Glenn and you will not be disappointed.

P.S.  I didn't modify the limb shape, just cleaned them up and narrowed the tips

Looks like a shooter. Sonny, you are a lucky guy!

Sixty lbs at a 26" draw and my all-time favorite bow design.  A little extra length in both limbs should make it a very stable shooter, to boot.  What's not to like?

Leave it to me in your will, Sonny!
