Cane/bamboo self nock?
« on: October 23, 2012, 07:28:28 am »
What type of wood do you use to make self nocks for you cane/bamboo arrows.  Not just a plug, but actual self nocks made and inserted?

I just glued a hard wood plug in mine and then cut the knock. You can just use the shaft itself but the 2 edges are hard on your serveing and string.

I ordered some of the bone and horn insert type nocks from 3Rivers. A bit expensive, I'll admit, but they work very well and look the part.

The pics don't show it , but I just glue in bamboo skewers and cut the nock. Wrap it with sinew and they work fine for me.  Josh

I don't even add a plug anymore I just cut the self nock and add a sinew wrap. I think Mullet has the horn nocks break on him. Charlie, any good hardwood will work for self nock just pay attention to the grain.

I do like Pat.  No plugs, just cut the nock into the shaft and wrap it.  Haven't had a problem yet.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

I was watching the Making the Korean Bamboo arrows dvd, and it mentioned that they use a wood call bush wood.  I did a search on it and I think it is what is called the dwarf Korean Lilac.  They claimed they had never seen a broken or busted nock from this wood.  And ideas?

And thanks for the replies guys as the way most of you have or are doing it is also how I have done mine, but am looking to expand my horizon by making self nocks and inserting them into the back of the cane.  I know of a couple of people that do it this way, and they look great and function very well.

Is it really a self nock if you add anything ?
If I was going to add something to a bamboo arrow for a nock it would be horn or Ebony !

Yep! Pat saw my arm get slapped not once but 3 times. I didn't want to shoot anymore.

I just cut a slot in the cane, also. I get it real smooth and then dip in in Super Glue.

Well for lack of better names Buckey,  if I put a plug in the end of my cane, and let it extent out past the end of the cane, cut a slot in it for my bow string, I still call it a self nock.  Unless there is something different that I would need to refer to it as?

Thanks Eddie.  This is another reason for asking, as I have read way too many incidents of bone, horn, and other materials being too brittle and failing.  I will stick with a good hard wood, once I decide on what I will be using.  I know that boxwood roots are extremely hard as they used it for mallet heads.
