Nasty Hackberry

Heres a few pics of a hackberry bow I just finished up. This piece was a side split from a bigger stave that I already made a bow from. I didnt really know if it would make a bow or not as it had some pretty big cracks in it. Pretty sure the cracks tore open when I split it into staves but I squeezed some glue in there and clamped em shut and theyve held up so far. This bow has some character for hackberry, its usually about as straight-grained as wood gets. The bow is 62" ntn, 57# at 27", 1-3/4" wide to midlimb and then tapers to 3/8" tips, beefwood tips, heat tempered belly, red mahogany stain and 4 coats of tru-oil. It spits an arrow pretty hard for a straight limbed bow. Thanks for lookin

The top limb has a whoop-di-do bout 12 " in from the tip that really messed with my eyes during tillering, It kept making me think there was a hinge forming there

Nice save Jamey ....  seems like after a  few bows we start looking for problems fix ???  What not enough good stuff :)

Wow!  I like it a bunch.  Looks like you had everything working against you and still ended up with a shooter.  I've been impressed with all the bows you have posted.  Nice work.  Makes me want to reconsider a crooked piece of Hackberry that I look at every so often, and keep setting it aside for lack of enthusiasm.  May give it a try now.

Thanks Kip, its always more fun to me to make a bow from a piece of wood that has some issues, I like to save the good wood for a bow that is going to someone else, this ones mine.
Thanks Lesken, yeah the tips are pretty thin on this one. The picture taker is fine, it was my phone sittin on top of the target. When I showed my wife the pic and she said " howd you do that"? I told her I had our son stand behind the target and take the pic. The look on her face was priceless!!! :laugh:
Thanks slimbob, hackberry is great bow wood,whether its crooked or straight. This particular piece was one Ive been pushin off to the side for a while now.

I like that nice looking bow Okie, it looks hunt worthy. I've made a couple hacks with that same whoopty doo in the working parts of the
top limb and agree it makes them tricky to tiller. You seem to have worked around it very well, good job.
