All bamboo bow . . . recurve. Talk about string follow.
« on: July 08, 2012, 01:49:45 am »
Well I just finished a new recurve.  Looks like and is modeled after the Fred Bear short recurve.  Mine is a bit longer.  Core is Bamboo and back and belly are node on bamboo.  The riser is built up with black cherry.  Arrow shelf and ebony tips.  I have never had a bow that was more difficult to make in terms of fiddly steps that need to be taken.  I've also never had a bow take that much string follow.  3" on each side.  It's 53# at like 30" draw.  I like the bow and don't like it.  It's too traditional, not primitive enough.  Photos:

Nice job, Scott. Got a plan  to fix the set with the glue up for the next one or do you think it is just the materials?

I for  one think you did a wonderful job!! I  also think  you accomplished two  things,,,,1, you  made a great  looking  bow,2, you  made a reference point in bow building!!!  let  me explain. any  bowyer worth his  salt  has thought about this(your bow)    and didn't know a safe place to start? I hope  you  post a little  more  detail on this build,,as I know  I will  reference this post often.  good  job!  thanks  JeffW

PB, looks like most of the reflex is in the handle area and is part of the design. Anyway it sure looks like a good shooting bow. Well done.  8)

I made a 3-piece takedown longbow once that had about that level of reflex in the handle.  It had pretty low string tension and the performance was mediocre.  Since it was a takedown, I made a second handle cutting the reflex in half and the string tension came up and the bow's performance was much better.   I agree with Jeff and Pat, this is  version 1.0 and I'll bet v1.1 will shoot just the way you want it to.  It sure is a beautiful bow.

a couple years ago over on TG a young guy built one of these, he pretillered the lams and then tempered the heck out of them, maybe the heat will help on the string follow, Bub

Yes it will help massively if you heat treat the belly piece before glue up.

OH thanks guys.

I gave the bow away.  I think I like to stick with Ipe and Hickory for bellies.  Am eager to give Osage and YEW a try.

I have 5 in the works now pluss a day job (Yay!).  I sold 1/2 my collection of bows at the local Renfaire.  I was going to buy a new tool but then then thought most of my work horse tools are things I made myself.  So I bought circus tickets for the 5 year old instead, and Disney on Ice tickets, and Cirque du Soliel tickets.......

Overboard?
