Yew Flat Bow Tiller Check

Fellows take a look at this Flat bow. It is low braced and want some other opinions. Now there is a hump right in the handle area that makes the right limb a little taller out of the handle on the back side of this stick. But it still looks like a hinge starting out about a third the way down the limb by my eyes. I am at 44 lbs. at 24" and want 50 at 28". So I really don't have a-lot more to take here. I am not used to working with Yew. If I need to take some wood off should it be the outer third? Dean

Yes, it is a hinge. Never pull a bow farther than it takes to expose a problem. Way to far on that draw. To fix a hinge leave that area alone and retiller the rest of the limb before and after. That limb looks particularly stiff mid limb on. Jawge

Agreed with Jawge. Looks like a hinge to me and that limb looks really stiff at midlimb. Id say by the time you get that limb bending correctly and then catch the left limb up to it you're goin to lose quite a bit of weight.

Dean, you will have to lighten the other limb once you fix the hinge. To keep from getting hinges take long sweeping strokes with you wood removal tool. You can go past the target area a little bit. Jawge

I don't know why but I have a lot of trouble with Yew. I've got a $200 stave to the point of almost finished with snake skins on that chryseld at full draw.

Eddie that is surprising to hear, I have never seen yew Chrysal. I have seen some great blow ups, but never chrysals

hey dean,
my suggestion for that area would be to clamp that hinged section flat to the workbench and heatgun just that area,   work it for a bit until you start to smell it nice.  then let it cool down and recheck it.  I have had really good luck with that weak area magically becoming a stiff area again,
