My New Fishing Bow. Inuit style.

So I've had this stave for awhile its not the best but since spring is creeping up on me I thought I would make a new fishing bow.

 

I started by removing all the sapwood and chasing it down to the 1st ring under the sapwood.

 

 

After that I layed out the profile at the widest its around 1.25in and tappers to 1in its pretty much a board right now and these are not the final dimensions.
Roughly shapped the handle and cut the thickness to .75in

When I got bored and was waiting for some water to start boiling for another project I braided some sinew for the backing. I got about 20ft done. Still need about 60 more feet.

Looking good. I like to fish but I prefer a rod and reel  ;)

What kind of wood is it?

What kind of fish are you intended to shoot with this bow just curious....

Looking like a pretty cool thread Bryce!

I'm a fisherman of conventional means these days.
But I cut my eye teeth running the rivers and tributaries of Southeast Texas Bowfishing!

While i was salmon fishing I saw a fat carp swim by and I was kicking myself for not bringing a bow. A round here we like to murder carp bc they eat the salmon eggs during spawning. After skinning the carp ill take there bodies to the river and feed the otters. Good fun for the niece. ;D

And the wood is taxus brevifolia (spell check)

i was thinking of doing and arctic bow, with southern cable backing but undecided on the backing bc the arctic backing looks great but takes a really long time to put on and tie up.

the cable takes a really long time. if i just take a weekend i could probably knock it out. but with school and work it will take me close to a week maybe a little longer.

i havent even started soaking my antler braces yet. though i might use baleen. we'll just see what the bow wants to do i guess.

I had a log of yew hanging out in my basement for a long time bc there where some inner ring that had been rotten or diseased from a viscous woodpecker attack. So I sent a chunk to Prairie Bowyer and he made me a spool for this bow. It came out absolutley amazing this guy is an artist.

Looking good. The ONLY fishing I do anymore is with a bow. In Nebraska, after the 1st of July, we can take gamefish as well as 'trash' fish.

Man, that reel is awesome, sexy too!  I tried to make one this past weekend (without a lathe) and it was a disaster...make ok firewood thought  :-\

I'd love to get my hands on one of those...

Cool thread and fishing reel, Bryce!  Be sure to show us how you attach it.  Are you going to braid sinew for the fishing line?  Holy-quacamole, Man.  That's a lot of braiding!
