56" Hickory Backed Osage R/D
« on: August 07, 2007, 03:13:23 pm »
I've done a couple reflex/deflex bows that were so-so and decided to try a short one with a 57.5" slat of some fo the light-density osage I'm always looking for things to use on.  Used a couple ripped strips from a 28" hickory board cut off for the backing, capped at the splice on the back.  56" ntn, 52#/27", 1 and 3/16" wide tapering to fairly slim tips, overlaid with brown osage.  Handle built up with ipe on belly side, osage and mahogany on back side.  Osage cap piece was a little thick I think (3/16") and clamping it on to glue made it wnat to peel off when drawing - explaining the thread wraps here the grip area.  6" between fades, limbs equal length, with handle shaped to be able to grip it lower than center to get the arrow passing through mid point between tips.  This is prototype 2, #1 having had the bend too low on limb giving weird drawn profile.  I have it lightened up to be a young lady's bow.   Put some bend in with heat and then more with glue up form, tips are out about an inch beyond back of handle.  Came out pretty good. Rips them off.

That looks cool Dave. I bet its a blast to shoot too, nice job. Those little r/d bows are tough to hit weight with, but after few tries it starts to get a bit easer.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but I bet it seems almost as forgiving / easy to shoot,  as a longer straight limbed bow.

Excellent bow Dave. Looks similar to the full draw profile of some of my bows. Having them bend so close to the handle is probably the piece wanted to pop off. Hickory backed osage makes a great combo.    Pat

Wow, Dave - You've got to be really proud of this one. Nice R/D profile. Thanks for the heads up - Got you bookmarked under Backed Bows of the Month for August.

I like it too.  Matt, you can feel the diff just drawing vs a straight bow less than 60"
