After a little more inspection, I found a ring i cut though. Had to take it down 6 more rings to find a good one, a lot of convex areas.(if the bow was for me I would of just thrown rawhide on it!). But I refuse to be lazy on this one. Reduced the belly, no checks- so it is a go!!!! But she has some nasty twists, one limb is straight and one almost has some sort of reflex/ deflex thing going on. I hope xxxxxxxx likes ugly bows!!

Beauty is in the eye of the bow holder... :)

Okay, got this Yew stave skinned looks like there is some run off when the harvester sawed this stave out.
I'm planning on laying sinew down on this "Bow To Be".

Think there will be a problem with stability do to the apparent run off?
Planning a 56 inch paddle bow near 2 1/4 inches at the widest point of the limb with three courses of sinew.



Should be able to leave most of this knot cluster behind when I cut out the front profile.

Gus it almost looks like its twisted to beat the band, but cut straight? I have tried elm that way it wouldnt straighten out for me, it went right back to where it strated.

Looks like the trunk was twisted but the stave was cut out straight.
There is a chance I could trim away the runnoft ends and get a bow out of there but if I go that rout
I may have to set this stave aside and select a new piece of wood for the trade...  :o

Guess I need to study this one a bit more before I let the hatchet do its work.

It was sawn... but not by me.
Got this stave out of the Ugly Pile up north...
Couldn't see the runoff with her skin on.

 Unfortunately, Gus, if the tree was twisted and the stave was sawn out it will have that twist to it unless you can follow the twist by laying out a bow diagionally following the twist. Just because the stave was cut straight doesn't mean the bow will be straight.   :(

gus ...how severe of an angle is the run off? if its real mild and not to bad then itll still be ok as a backed bow. ive never done it with yew tho so take my word for a grain of salt. if you plan on sinewing and making a west coast bow then you peel almost all the sapwoood off anyways,and the grain might be better underneath,or worse. longitudinal grain can change from the heart to the bark in a tree. it just depends on the tree and each is different,and some the grain is the same all the way thru. wish i could see the stave in person to help ya out???

Just Kidding!   >:D

It was to be a mid weight hunting bow.
But in light of the situation I'll set it aside for a later project for myself.
Couldn't in good faith start out with a questionable of this magnitude for someone else...

So now I'm looking at Pacific Dogwood or Osage.
Probably go with the Dogwood just to be odd... Since I do tend to be just a bit odd... :)

I'll get some pics up of the Dogwood Stave ASAP!
I know it is a good straight grained stave with just a few knots for charactor.

Here's the Mummy unwrapped...  not quite enough to overlap at the handle but it won't show with the grip wrap.....  another first (for me) Snake Skins!!
