Since my ideas of a Surprise Sassafrass bow ended with that knot midlimb I decided to bite the bullet and try this Apple sapling stave I've had drying for a year+  Here she is prior to cutting out the top profile, plenty of branch/knot areas to work around so this one will test my skills (or the lack there of)

She is 68" tip to tip...1 3/4" at the fades to a 1/2" at the tips.

Less than a week - NOT, I had the bow almost done, just waited for a name and the details. Besides, I'm retired. I put Danish oil on for the finish, water resistant - ""Not Shiney"", apply 2 coats  and wipe residue off after a period of time.

Good looking stuff so far...im starting to question my choice of stave ...na, so far I have removed more than a quarter of a century of growth rings and might have found the back.oh ya 25+ one by one because of multiple pin knots the wood rips when you try to make good time.this one may take a while...sorry xxxxxxx it wont get sent out this week ;)

Well my first stave choice was J-U-N-K. It had severe wind checks that couldnt be gotten around! I keep staring at this 12 month old red elm 1/2 log that wants to be a bow. I stink I may go after that one next.

I'm just trying to decide to complete one of three that is almost finished or, drag down a hackberry stave. ;D Doing that I will have to put off sinewing the yew bow I need to work on.

Got the bark peeled off of an osage stave for******** last weekend. Ever since I've start building bows for family and friends its been just me and PA mag and bowyers bible. I would like to say its a privalge and an honor to build a bow for one of my peers! You guys build some beauties!!!

Geez Lee...that apple staves like a slalom course...or like a cone course for cars  :laugh:...yup..you are sick for enjoying such staves.  ;)

My stave might not pan out either...it developed a couple lil checks on the belly for some weird reason,but the back is fine...sometimes I hate osage. Sometimes it does funny things on you for no reason,and says screw you. Ill dig a lil deeper on her and continue on cus it wont scare me away,and osage is tough stuff. Good thing I got a lot more wood and time on my hands if I don't like the way it turns out.

It seams i am not the only one with a ugly osage stave for a trade bow. 70 " long. Down to a ring, that it for today.

Nope, I have one too.  Looks like you're making good progress.

I'm home from work sick with a cold, but I finally got stir crazy and went out and chased a growth ring around a very persnickety knot.




I hate it when the wood dives into a knot and on this one both the back and belly do it.  I spent 4 times as much time doing that knot as I normally would take to chase the entire back.  It's inboard of the recurved tip about 8".  There's no chance I'll get it to bend there.  And I still have the rest of the back to chase the ring on.
