osage bow for my brother

so i m wanting to make an osage bow for one of my brothers.
he is 6'4" tall and has a 32" draw.
he typically shoots a 60# bow.

i have a stick of osage i started on.
its 68" long.
one end was fairly narrow once i got done past all the bore tunnels.
the last 17" or so is just slightly less than 1 3/8" wide.
with a bit of snakyness.
think i can pull this on off 60# @ 32"
that same end also deflexes quite a bit.
the other end reflexes as much.
thought i would heat and reflex the narrow end to match the other end.
first pic is the narrow end

again the narrow end. the ruler starts about where the stick starts being right at 1 3/8"wide.

here you can get an idea of the deflex on the narrow end.

and the reflex on the other end.


any suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated
heaviest weight bow i have made so far was about 52#
sure would like to sneak up on a 60# bow this time.

1 3/8" to 1 1/2" is all you need for an osage bow. I wouldn't make it less that 66" and 68" would probably be better for a stiff handle bow.

wow guy, thats a lot of pressure man.
beings this is only my 7th or 8th bow, i be a long ways from perfection.
but ill give it my best shot and if i can wrangle a bow that works for my brother
and dont blow up in his face....i'll be happy.

You go girl! Looking forward to this one, even if it is for a 32" knuckledragger. I'd straighten it and induce a little backset planning to end up with some string follow after tiller. Also, would use the whole length for such a long draw. If you've made a 52# @ 28" then you've already made a bow that was over 60 @ 32 - most bows gain about 3 lbs per inch of draw in this general weight range. There's plenty of width at the skinny end, heck, you'll have it down to less than 1/2" by the time you're done. Keep us updated on the progress.

That will probably work but 32 draw is a lot at 68 length even for Osage unless everything goes prefect,I would have a little bend in the handle or look for a longer piece of wood just to be safe. Good luck. I would also get a bow[Maybe Glass] that I know can be drawn that far and let him draw just as if he was going to shoot it and measure his length,everyone I know says they have a 28 inch or more draw but when you watch and take a true measurement it rarely is unless they are trying to pull behind their ear like an English war bow shooter. Just a thought. :) :)

maybe its genetic pappy. i pull a full 28" and wear 34" jeans(i'm 5' 9"-or at least i used to be)...this brother wears 38" jeans and they aint dragging the ground(tho his knuckles nearly are :  ) i got the measurements from one of his pals. dont really wanna ask bob to do any measuring as it's gonna be a surprise. gonna leave the bow full length(68") and hopefully that'll work. may rawhide the back just for an extra measure of security. still thinking stiff handle but not really long, not much over 4" as he has long slender hands too. and you may be right, pappy, so if it's designed for that and he doesnt quite pull that far...bow should be fine. will just have to figure that in as im getting it tillered. but if it comes out 60# @ 32" (maybe i can get 62 or 63# outta the bow)and he only pulls 31" still be about 56#+. shld make a hunter still yes?

O ya,that sounds like a plan. I hunt with 50 so 56 shouldn't be a problem. :) :)
