Fish Glue

Anyone make fish glue ? How do you do it ?

I believe it is made by boiling fish air bladders.

Sturgeon fish bladders are the best. James Parker told me that not all fish bladders make glue.

Just finished reading Dr. Karpowicz book Ottoman Turkish Bows.


In it he lists several desirable fish and methods for rendering glue.
He notes that glue made from Sturgeon Bladders is Excellent.
Catfish, Gillbacker, and Croaker bladders all make good glue.
Carp bladders are too Greasy.

The Palate skins of Sturgeon were also used to make glue.
Almost any Large fish is worth trying.

They are protected!  ;)  The best ones are about 5# to 10#. I don't know about glue but they sure taste good!  ;D

Yes Sir,

I know the Goliath Grouper is protected.
But here in Tejas you can still take Gag and some of the other species...
Should be worth a try.
And Grouper Pounding time in State waters is fast approaching as they come in close with cold weather.

Man, I have discarded SO much materials over the years...  :-[
Now I know better.

Looks like some of the bowyers of old would use a mixture of Hide/Tendon Glue with some Fish Glue mixed in.
Very interesting stuff, and quite amazing what they accomplished with these glues.
I find it very interesting also, that he listed Croaker Bladders as good.
Got to get out on the water after some Golden Croaker!!!  :)

Fish bladders have been used for centuries to make isinglass and glue. But the skin can also be used to make glue.  Cod was used in the past as a substitute for sturgeon.  I believe carp can be used as well.  Carp were commonly raised by monks in monasteries back in the day, and I'm sure some of the carps' parts were used for glues, paints, and finings for beer.
Any critter tastes good with enough butter on it.

Brewed a Carp flavored beer once, the fact that I never added fish to the fermenter not withstanding.

Don't they have mullet on the menu in the Southeast?

Deep fried or smoked mullet is to die for!  8)   I spent a month each summer at my Grandparents  cottage on Pensacola Bay and grew up in Savannah. You better believe I like mullet...and Mullet!  ;)
