54" Ironwood, Ishi style (not for bom)
« on: August 28, 2011, 11:06:36 pm »
Here is the latest (#3) stave bow. I roughed it out of a "half-log". The roughout had a little more than three inches of deflex so I flipped the tips some. It came out with about 1" reflexed tips (working recurves) and retained about 1" of the original deflex mid-bow.

Original tree recovered from a "bug" attack and that gave it 5 "nodes" like bamboo has. After the bow was all tillered out I discovered a powder-post beetle hole in the upper limb (he was still home so I super-glued his butt right in the hole) so I took some close of that.

First set of pics is the usual pluss a couple of the roughed out stave. The second set is some close up pics and the last one is this years deer huntin arsenal ( bows for two friends and about half of the arrows I've made so far.

The bow is 54" tip to tip, 42# @ 26" and is really well mannered. Also mine is just the shape of Ishi's as his was Oregon Yew, rawhide backed, and 44" long it's at the Pheobe Hearst Museum.
All comments welcome,

For some reason the site doesn't want to post the last pic so I'll try it again.

Beautiful bow Rich.  I've seen lots of live borers in wood, but never thought to superglue one in there. :o  What an interesting thing to be able to point out in your bow.  Looks great.

Another cool little bow, Rich. I love these simple bows. They aren't as simple as they look.  ;)

Thank you much fellas, The group pic is just bows I made for a couple of the guys that's gonna be at huntin camp this year. The arrows in the pic's are mine the upper left is 6 hillbilly 61 cane with ken75 stone heads, the upper right 6 are birch with Zwickey black diamond, and the 3 in the front are birch with Zwickey Eskimo's
Got me a nice piece of Yeller wood to work on next, but it's allmost time to get serious about shootin prctice cause I think them deer are gettin just a bit cocky-pants. Bow buildin may have to wait a few weeks....
thank ya again
