i was just looking at the weather and i wanted to wish all of you that are in the path of it before it weakens  good luck, and i hope you make it out ok. i luckily will only be getting the cat. 1 part of it  :-\.
good luck and i hope no one gets hurt by it if it goes the way they are saying.

Looks like most of the models has it turning east and just clipping the OBX of NC now.  Still looks to be a pretty strong storm, but hopefully damage will be minimal.

 It will probably be a Cat 3 or 4 by the time it hits Virginia and the OBX.

 Take that back, It's already a Cat 3, gust up to 140mph. It had 90 mph winds at 6 this morning.

just saw some new weather..... now i'm getting worried, it said when it hits us it will be a cat 2  now and for me it will be almost a direct hit :-\

 It'll run out of gas by then. They speed up when they hit that cold water. You have a surfboard? Probably some of the best surfing seen on the end of Long Island in 20 years. ;D Or, OBX.

Unfortunately we won't get anything from this storm. We could use a little rain though.
  Noel, flooding is what you guys should be concerned about. Apparently there is a front coming to the NE before Irene gets there so the ground will be saturated. Water is what kills or injures most folks in these big storms and not necessarily the winds.
  The last big storm to hit the East Coast was Hugo in 1989. It was headed towards the Savannah River when it stopped in the Gulf Stream and built up strength. It moved 1 degree north and ran over Charleston instead. We drove up to Charleston the day after to deliver food and camping gear to a friend living there and were amazed at the damage. Live oak trees swisted appart and 100ac of mature pine trees snapped off about 30 feet above the ground.
 We were living in Bluffton SC at the time which is only a few miles north of Savannah. If the storm had come into Savannah our house(3' above sea level) would have been gone.
  I was a boat mechanic at the time and had customers boats to deal with before the storm came in. Got pretty hairy towards the end. My wife Marcia and I were dealing with 4' to 5' breakers at the boat ramp as we pulled those boats out and secured them for the storm.

pat, you are right the flooding will be terrible, luckily mu house is on the of the highest parts of the island, but i wouldn't be surprised if the island became 2 or 3 after this. the place im worried about is a small sandy strip connecting two parts of the island, i was almost wiped out in 1938, its only like 2ft above sea level with a big cove funneling waves into it :'(. all i know is im getting my boat out of the water no matter what ;)

Put your boat on the ground(not on a trailer) and put the drain plug back in it. Let it fill with water so the wind doesn't blow it away. Disconect the battery as well.
