Oceanspray and Yew 'D' bow for Joy
« on: June 20, 2007, 11:32:20 pm »
Hello Everyone,

With the talk about 'D' bows I got inspired to post one that I built a few months back.  I originally tillered this little Oceanspray stave to 50# @ 27" and it took almost 2" of set--not that I blame it--so I threw it aside for a couple months.  I ended up laminating on a Yew belly and tillering it out for a birthday present for my wife Joy.

52" [?] nock to nock.
7/8" wide (no narrowed handle section).
3/8" tips with horn and Abalone overlays.
Leather over cork grip.
35# @ 25".

It's a zipply little shooter with the 1/4" doug fir arrow shaft pictured.  Joy shoots it pretty well, but she can shoot anything well.

She is a real beauty, the bow that is, well your wife's not bad either, ah shucks you know what I mean. ;D  So did it lose the set when you laminated it with Yew?

That sure is a pretty bow Josh.  I hope you didn't tell Joy it came out of the corner of shame.  ;D I thought I was the only one that made those 1/4" arrows. Justin

Beautiful Bow J.D. The tips, cork grip and wood combo really make it snazzy. Full draw pic looks dead on. Whats she shooting at?

Beautiful tiller on an interesting combo, Josh. Looks like a perfect fit for Joy. With her classic form I have no doubt she can shoot. ;)   Pat

Thanks a lot guys.  This was a fun bow.  To answer your questions:

The Yew helped a lot.  It ended up with about 1" of set after shooting in--1/2" at rest.  Interestingly, I kept tillering it out to weights that were too high but as I kept getting the Yew thinner and thinner it began to take set again.  I'm happy with the results but more Yew might have made it a little quicker.  Oceanspray is extremely strong in tension.  I don't know if you could break an oceanspray self bow without extreme abuse.

She was shooting at a window. ;D ;D  I was just trying to get a pic of the tiller with a neutral background.

Man, I forgot a braced shot.

Corner of shame.  Yeah--that stave was a hearbreaker.  It was the best Oceanspray stave I had cut up to that point and I seasoned it for a year and found a 12" split in the end.  That's why the bow's so short.

Thanks again.  I've been meaning to post that bow for months.
