Another Longbow Misstake Turned Shortbow
« on: June 27, 2011, 11:03:09 pm »
OK. I set out to build my first selfbow. Have an Osage limb from last spring that a friend gave me. It was<<<54" long notice I said was? Got it tillered a little lower than I wanted (35#) so I decided to try and flip the tips (another first) On the first on it cracked straight across at 4" So, again I cut 4" off each end and start retillerng. Ended up with this. 46" n2n 41# @ 26" 11/8 at the grip tapering to 3/4" at tips, bed through handle. Took 1 " set (my fault. I hurried it) with pin nocks. Sewed an leather grip on late last night b4 going to bed. I'll try to get a pic tomorrow when the Dr (wife) lets me get off this couch

The tiller looks to be spot on.  Hey that is a good save.
Happy hunting to all!

Thomas, it's pretty easy to make these...you start off with a bow that is 68"-72" and once you ruin your recurve tips you chop em off once or twice (sometimes more) and then you end up with a nice short stave to try one of these bows with  >:D  Trust m, I've been there more than I care to remember  8)

Whew....you got all of that one working. And 1" of set is not bad when your pulling it 3" past half its length. That tells me you tillered it well IMO. Nice job. Ive made the same mistake and was actually pleased with my outcome even tho I lost ten inches of length. We've all been there.
