Vine Maple shortie
« on: May 28, 2011, 07:04:59 pm »
This is a vine maple bow from my first attempt at a stave. 56" ntn 35#@28 with flipped tips/recurve. I first made this one 62" ntn and it came out @25# and a real dog(too much mass I guess) so I took off 4" heat treated the belly and flipped the tips.  It now has great speed and hit right where I look. the goofy coloring on the back is the remains of amber colored shellac I couldnt get off(tried acetone, denatured alcohol, laquer thinner) none worked. kinda looks like cambium left on. It's not done yet , I still need to finish it and choose a handle. oh and the tips are black walnut.

EtV it looks really nice to me. Love the end to end shot.

Ain't nothing shabby about a 35lb bow specially on a piked save like you did. Lot of nice work in that bow.

Scott, thanks man. I forgot to add that when I heat treated the belly I put 1.5" of reflex, so it took about that in set which I'm happy with since it is my first shortie besides kids bows.  Gordon, thank you that means alot from the vm master. :)

Nice bow Eric! Looks like every inch of that bow is pulling it's weight :)  Looks great for a first stave bow, I hope my first stave turns out half that good!
