Kid's Bow #3 - Redemption (now with Finished pics)
« on: May 21, 2011, 10:48:47 pm »
Well folks looks like we have a bit of success today.  I used the same layout/profile on this bow as I did on the Hick/Osage that blew on me.  Not sure if the hickory was bad on the other or not but this one survived  ;D  I was a bit more aprehensive as this was a Hickory / Teak build and it's tillered out to #25 @ 23" but it seems that thinning out the backing helped to keep the backing from crushing the Teak belly.  Teak may be an OK belly wood for lower weight Kid's bows after all  ???

Anyway, here is a couple pics...

This is my oldest son, Colter, happy to see his Dad has finally made him a bow that didn't blow up on him  ::)

Here is the $ shot of him at full draw.

I'll snap a few more pics of the bow up close after I get a chance to put a handle wrap on it, antler tips and 6-8 coats of Tru-Oil.

Thanks for looking!

Good job!  Nice bow!
Talking trees. What do trees have to talk about, hmm... except the consistency of squirrel droppings?

Thanks PD (really liking the bend in the handle type bow) and guys!  Got the leather handle area built up, suoer-glued and rasped to shape for the final leather hand wrap...antler tips are on, grooves filed and shaped to fit and 1 coat of Tru-oil.  This Teak is dry and THIRSTY stuff so I would guess 10-12 coats at a minimum.  She's looking like a "real" bow bow.

try burnishing the surface with a Mason jar before you start Tru Oil coats Lee. It make the surface hard and shiny, which takes about half as many coats to get a great finish.
