46" Ash eastern woodland, 62# @ 24" (not for bom)
« on: March 03, 2011, 06:15:59 pm »
Here is the last bow I was workin on before the wife's accident. Got it done now so thought ya might like a look. This baby is real quick and pulls like a mule.
 Ash, 46" ntn, 60#+ @ 24"
1-1/4" at the grip tapers to 3/4" at the string knocks
1/2" thick at the grip and 3/8" thick at the tips (even taper)
The bow came from a museum bow but nobody seems to know what tribe or band it belonged to but I thought it was pretty cool in the cut-out area.

hope ya like it.

You make those bows look so cool. I've got to make me one. Really like the design and shape.

Looks like a perfect choice for a blind/ambush bow. Really nice. Thanks for sharing.

Bowmakers are a little bent, but knappers are just plain flaky.

Pretty sweet Rich. I'd like to copy it but the big Ash tree I recently cut turned out to be brittle Green Ash instead of the White Ash I mistook it for. I bet it would be a good one to do in hickory too though. You're an inspiration to all of us, sir.

Another great trekking bow.  It looks so practical for someone that had to journey and that is some serious power for a bow that length.  Great one.  So sorry to hear your wife had an accident.  I hope she is ok?  I've had to care for my wife for an extended period of time.  It's tough.  I sincerely hope she mends well.

That is really a cool short bow ! What type of Ash is this? Also glad you wife is better. :)
my friends think my shops a mess, my wife thinks I have too much bow wood, my neighbors think im redneck white trash and they may all be right on the money!!

Fellas,
the bow is white ash...it's quartersawn and tight ringed (between 1/16" & 1/32") the other woods I use for these NA bows are black ash, walnut, and red elm.....I believe that the grey elm (American Elm) will also work well but have not used it so far on the short bows.
Also hickory would be a good choice.....
One comment about the tiller... I made the bow bend before the limb cut-outs were made....and it was a little stiff tiped but after cutting in the limb design the limbs just "opened" up some and it settled right in to a pretty nice tiller profile. Also it did not drop any weight...just gained a little draw length.
