Molly Build
« on: February 20, 2011, 07:53:49 pm »
Well I thought I would try a build-a-long. Going to try for 50# @ 27" 52" n2n.  This is a backing experament. I don't know what the abbreviation would be since I'm using a luonn (flooring under-layment) backing on Hickory. I reckon it would be LBH :-\

The hickory is 3/4'  and the luonn is 3/16" I've used TB11 on both pieces.

Then I wraped in stretch wrap

The next is wrapping the bands around the whole length

The last thing for today was to induce some reflex. I put the tips on a block of 2x2 and clamped the middle down. Then slit the stretch wrap to give some drying area between the bands

If time allows tomorrow I'll draw the pattern  and maybe get it cut out. ;D

Neat idea.  Isn't lauan a plywood?  I've used it under tile many times, never thought of backing a bow with it.  Sure hope it works out well.

Cool build-a-long! lookin forward to the rest of it. Luan board is typically made from a mahogany, can't remember which type of mahogany though.

That's what I remember too, but the mahogany layer is quite thin, basically a veneer if I remember right.  I'm thinking it is a 3 layer plywood with 2 thin exterior layers (one being mahogany) with a thicker center layer?  Been awhile so I could certainly be wrong.  For its thickness I remember it being pretty strong.  I'm really curious to hear how it works out.

I hate it when I break a band saw blade in the middle of something.  I usually keep an old blade around so I'm not totally dead.  My current blade is a half inch skiptooth that really goes through osage.  I need to pick up a spare as it's the first one like this I've used and I REALLY like it.  Doesn't cut a curve worth a hoot though.

OK. Got the blade and got the rest of it cut out.

Tips/levers side profile From fade to tip .75 to .50

Front view. Handle 4" x 1" Fades 1.75" to woking limbs. Working limbs 12" into 1.75 lever fades. 9" levers. .75 at fades to .50 at tips.

Side view. 1" handle. Fades 1" to 1.50" at working limbs. Fades at levers 1.25 1" tapering to .50

Trying to decide on tip overlays or just nocks. Soon as I decide that, Ill start the tillering.

Looks like the backing aint gonna work :( Didn't think about this part, the layers on the luon started separating as I was exercising the bow between scrappings >:( since I used TB11, I think I'll try to heat the backing off and either leave it without a backing or, try another type :-\ Any suggestions?

Hi Folks,  Lauan   is also know as phillipine mahogany.   It's not really a mahogany, and there are several species of related trees that get mixed and sold together in the mills.  I've always found it to be quite splintery, brittle and fairly low spG.  It certainly would not have been my first choice as a part of a bow.   ( though as I said several species get sold under the same name and your sample may be denser and stronger than I'm used too.)  I'd suggest removing the lauan and trying something else.   Ron

Since the Lauan didn't work, I cut the tip overlays off and planed the  Lauan off, sanded the back down and added a Hickory backing. Tillering is done and worked on the finish today. Super Glued a IPE shelf 1/8" thick on. Back, sides and levers are stained in red mahogany. The belly working limbs are stained using Old English scratch remover for dark woods.  Next will be the Urethane finish and grip.
